Differential Oil??

So gonna be switching the fluids from my Transmission & Differential so went onto E-TAS ( I work for Toyota ) to look up how much fluid I will require in total and found the following and was wondering if anyone could help explain it further if possible.
Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

Differential Oil LSD Type (Rear- 4WD & X-Runner) 2.8L (3.0, 2.5) Hypoid gear oil for limited-slip differential API GL-5 hypoid gear oil SAE 80W-90

Manual Transmission (6-spd) 1.8L (1.9, 1.6) API GL-4 or GL-5 SAE 75W-90

so what exactly is the reasoning for 75w90 (typical gear oil) in the Tranny
and then recommending 80w90 in the Diff???

Transfer case ? Do you have an X-Runner ? (that's what I thought I saw of the pics in your other posting) We're 2WD, no transfer case.

Anyway, I'm coming due to a diff fluid change myself... so I'll be in your boat shortly.

As far as quantities are concerned, there are three numbers for each of the fluids.

One is liters. The other is quarts. Not sure what the third is...

As far as 75/90 vs 80/90, it's really a difference (and a very minor one at that) in cold weather viscosity. Not sure that it makes a difference, but I'll let a qualified gear-lube specialist chime in on that one.

I got the number the 3 are
Litres, US qt & IMP qt
but thought it weird that regular diffs they suggest 75w90 for the 2WD (except pre-runner) and because we got LSD they suggest 80w90

Hmmm.... good question. My guess is that because of the LSD (basically a bunch of clutch discs all packed together into the diff housing), that the diff generates more heat in operation and needs a thicker oil to resist thermal breakdown ? Dunno...

Call Toyota and speak to the engineers that wrote the specs :stupid:.

Most of the time... when it comes to stuff like that I don't worry about it I just do it heh. Gear Oil is even more msyterious than Motor Oil.
