This was the moment of truth, after a relatively painless install and alignment job...it came time to finally see how much angle i gained over stock by cutting out a section of my outer tie rod mount, too decrease turning radius, increase steering angle and possibly help reduce bump steer.

Here's some before pictures...of max steering angle with my OEM rims on and OEM knuckles.

before anyone asks...the artwork on these rims was done BY RatRod at texfest and .no, i dont drive around on these with this tread life, i just brought them for mock up and something else i will go into later...>**<

Picture of the OLD vs New knuckles. Old oem ones are the one caked in mud...:laugh:

OK...

results....now, before i get asked 1000 times for pics of new angle vs. old...i completely forgot to take reference photos of after install. :ahhhhh:Infact, i only now just remembered while making this thread... I was so freaking ancy to take her out for a spin, i just buttoned everything up and took off for the nearby parking structure to do some figure 8's and possibly diagnose any issues. Next week, ill put her back on the rack, and take some reference photos. :top:

...but...id have two videos of testing, and one does show the new angle during a quick walk around. *Fair waring, i'm working on about 3 hours of sleep, as i couldn't fall asleep last night due to anticipation...so i took two NOS energys to wake up.. Grumpy, Torspd and Toon know what happens when i combine lack of sleep and 500+mg of caffeine, think TRD blower install @ tex-fest. :laugh: So i do ramble a bit in the videos...

The technical specs will be kept quite...as i'm gonna try and market these to any potential 2nd gen, 5 lug Tacoma drifters. :top:

I will tell you this much..

>> bump steer is all but gone, (with me at SS/XII track drop level).\ (when you lower thse trucks, the tie road angle gets fe'd up) There are threads on this isssue, im too tired to dig it up...

>>Steering effort has increased by about 20%.

>>I will get some exact measurements on how much my turning radius diameter has decreased by.

>> I wanna find a stock XR, find its max steering angle then measure mine (not 100% sure on how to do this...), to get an exact number on before/after results. Thoughts?

** back to what i was saying earlier... When i had designed these, i had built them around the fact that i was going to rock a narrower rim and tire up front. Have 1" H&R spacer up front, FYI. Down to a 18x9, +24 w/ 245/45s.....compared to 18x10 +22 on 275/40's

well, once the truck was properly aligned and what not...i checked my clearances and found i have some serious room left to increase the angle EVEN MORE!!! get this, nothing rubs, even with my massive 275's up front.:blurock::rockon:

and what do you know????... i have a second set of knuckles if i ever so please to take her to the next level.:crinklehair:

...And before everyone asks for drifting videos...im going to hit ADAMS motor sports park next week. Thursday night drift event. :rockon:

I'm going to take my truck out tomorrow and do more testing, and look for any signs of fatigue in the metal/welds. Hit up some bumpy roads, un-even surfaces, corners...etc... I'm 100% sure that the amount of work that went into welding these things up (guy who did this, has been welding since i was in diapers), is way above over kill and i wont have any issues. But, better safe then sorry. My friends Nissan Hard-body drift truck, i copied his method (more or less) and he's had many thousands of trouble free miles. :top:

~~~~~~if anyone has any questions about what these do and how/what they fix, post in this thread, or my build thread, and i will answer them to the best of my abilities. :rockon:
Damn u shortened those tie rod mounts on the knuckles pretty good. Bout how much u take off? Aren't the stock knuckles cast?
These might pose a rubbing issue for djmers wanting to run fairly wide rim and tire setup. Go djm w those 18x10 and u will rub!!
This is true to some extent. As the suspension moves up, it moves closer to the frame... Eventually, i might go DJM and will test it out and let folks know how it works :top:
...Or might just stay at this ride height, or just a tad lower....once i get my next piece of this Drift truck equation figured out, i will have a better idea of what im gonna do next. :rockon: Total cost of building these has exceeded $600...:rolleyez:
Amount taken off is Classified, also why i did not do any super close-ups...:crinklehair:
Yes, our knuckles are cast. This is why i took them to an expert fabricator and payed him TIG weld them, instead of just having my buddy MIG them back on... He knows what up in terms of right way of doing this. I'm no expert on Welding, so i cant recite back to you what settings he used and what not. All i know is that it was a TIG welder.
He also did the aft mentioned Nissan Hard-body drift truck's Knuckles, which are also cast. Hes has done one off, suspension components/ roll cages/ turbo mani's, for some very high dollar projects....like $100k plus cars...He was working on a 1000hp cobra thats worth over $125k, when i brought them by to weld up. :ahhhhh:I cant go into details about it, as its hush-hush...:smile:
So i trust his work more the i trust anything else i have ever done to this truck...lol:laugh:
His only warning was to check them if i hit a curb while drifting, or do some other kind of high load impact to them...:top:
That's the plan!!! this was one HUGELY needed piece of the puzzle...next major "upgrade" will take some time in terms of R&D. :smile:
NOS energy is 260mg of caffeine per can...:crinklehair:
Get the GoPro on the frame rail forward of the front suspension looking back for some real action shot. Day slide for best result.
What is used as the travel limit stop?
Is there a contact point on the knuckle that comes in contact with the lower control arm like on some 4x4s or is the limit stop the physical limit of the steering rack?
The rack limits it. Same as stock. There are contact patches on the spindle for steering stops, but none where ever designed. Typicall Toyota...reminds me of our fpr vacuum line....just kinda half assed it...:rolleyez:
Once I iron out any future kinks with them, then I will get some steering stops made. Im think of using some low pro bump stops, and make them adjustable too. :top: right now, it's all just an idea...:top:
We can work out some more shots...maybe at that meet on the 12th...:crinklehair:
>>>>>. Put about 100 miles on them today....about 50 of them in the rain...:rockon:
Let's just say this....the amount of steering angle I get when sideways, was enough to make me laugh like a school girl. :blurock:
Thursday night can't come soon enough. :rockon:
lets go on those nuckles, more steering range would help out on the track a lot.
So am i, so am i... :biggrin: I will sure as fawk post them up in this thread, probably will also go up in my build thread, too. :top:
IDK if i want to sell them to any grip drivers...they are, after all...GRIP DRIVERS:crinklehair::eviltongue:
Not sure on the tie rod clearance on the sway bar mount on the lower control arm. Its gets pretty close on my truck, im afraid it might hit on a DJM drop. I'd have to see the kit, installed, and figure if it will work on not.
If i decide that i want more angle, and go through with V2.0, i will put the prototype up for sale. New wheel bearings and grease seals...I am no-wear near comfortable enough with the final product yet to actually go out and market them....yet :rockon:
Thursday will be the day where i will know where i stand with what i want to do next.
The only way I could say of testing the difference is just measure the turning radius on the stock xr by making a circle with it and then you do yours... see how much you gained vs stock.
Only issue I see is my trucks welded diff makes its turning radius worse then normal...:dontknow:
Just ship me a set and I'll take the measurements for you, on condition of keeping the knuckles. :top:
