so i've been lurking around trying to find the best option for my 06 xr
found alot of helpful info but nothing too concrete for me to make a decision on

i was thinking/wondering which one would go best since im n/a

a ram air system (not really sure which brand or type since there are few threads on it)

or a AFE stage 2 si cai.

right now im pretty much stock got a urd ss on the way and my modding seems to be on the way, (wish my pockets cooperated) but i want to get every mod possible and leave the s/c for last (since its so expensive)

so any info on these and the power they give our trucks, pics, brands, reviews, things for sale you guys know about would be Xtremely appreciated :top:

thanks in advance

J

Afe stage 2si is nasty I had it when I was n.a. but if you really wanna ram it I would open the fog light housings and put two pipes going to some kind of air box

every aftermarket intake will give you a nice gain in power and sound! the only one available for our trucks that is a TRUE cold air intake is the urd tcai which will obviously give you the best gains!

Ram air out of the Hood scoop is pointless.....not very much air hits the scoop with it being such a low profile....your better off saving the time and money and going cold air intake unless you do something crazy like the fog light type of ram air then have to worry about dirt, debris, and mostiure

It doesn't really have much to do with it being a low profile scoop. It is in a low pressure area on the hood. If it were closer to the front of the truck, it would probably work well as a ram air system

i've been looking around and urdusa.com my current options are

http://urdusa.com/Intakes-Cold-Air-...-2-Si,-Tacoma,-2005-2011-V6/product_info.html

or

http://urdusa.com/Intakes-Cold-Air-...-INTAKE,-05+-Tacoma-4.0L-V6/product_info.html

really tough call to make since i wanto get the best one possible and so far ppl seem to thinkg the other one its not worth the extra $76

I know exactly what you're saying, the AFE is a good intake (what i have) and the URD has great reviews for the most part. Some people did have issues with the URD intake taking on water if they have a aftermarket grill and no hydro-shield or sock on the filter.

Other things to consider is you need to modify a few things for the URD to work, cut out a small section of sheet metal by the radiator and extending the MAF wires, which need to soldered and not just spliced.

The Afe is a straight bolt on kit, no modifying needed and is more friendly to the TRD supercharger then the URD intake, however the URD intake is good with the URD supercharger kit....

If you do plan on getting a aftermarket grill you will need a sock or hydro-shield for the filter, which then would make the intakes almost what and what on the price.

Just a few things to consider before you buy, both are great intakes, both have ups and downs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if I believe the URD intakes will NOT work with the urd supercharger kits, they either will use the stock intake box or come with their own intake.

And also, if you go with the URD intake and you get an aftermarket grill, you absolutely will need the shield, not just the sock. Without the shield, bad stuff will happen, ask me how I know lol.

Between the two though the URD intake is the way to go, the AFE will work with a TRD supercharger but it sounds like you will not be doing that for a long time. So I would go with the URD. Its a really nice intake. Cant get more "cold air" than the filter being up in front of the radiator lol

I run the URD TCAI with a TRD blower and a stock grill, jut have to shave the inside of it to make a little extra room. So if you plan on running the TRD blower don't let people say the URD intake doesn't work.

I too have the same set up TRD SC and URD intake. They compliment each other nicely :top:

I never seen the TRD s/c with a URD intake, I assumed it could be done but probably would require some modification to make it work.

Whatever you choose out of the two, both are great, so you won't make a mistake going one way or another!

Ah you're right about the URD intake with the supercharger, I could have sworn I seen that somewhere but now I think about it all the photos had other intakes, my mistake, I can't wait to get a supercharger one day, it'll happen lol

If you're gonna get an intake you might as well pull in cold air, the URD is the way to go. You don't have to hack the truck up or anything, hold up template, trace, cut. The maf wires are even easier. it shouldn't take much more than maybe a half hour to cut the section of metal and splice the maf wires.

and yeah i was thinking if i end up gettn there my behind the grille lights are gonna have to go but before i do that i really wanto be sure im buying the right one and the one that will benefit my truck best and give me the more gain, since in n/a i really want the most power i can possible:biggrin:
