Does anyone know of an aftermarket steering rack with a higher ratio that would enhance autocross performance?

FJ cruiser or 4 Runner rack? I am trying to figure out if anyone has done this, whether it would fit, and how much it would mess with stability control because the steering angle sensor would be wrong. Anyways, the FJ/4 runner rack is 2.7 turns lock to lock instead of 3.43/3.64 for 4x2/4x4.

Steering angle sensor is in the column steering ratio change will not effect it. If you lowered your X a bump steer correction would help.

Exactly. The steering angle sensor a smaller degree than the wheels are actually turned as the ratio is different. I was trying to read about this on cars where quick racks are more common practice but didn't find much really.

I have a 4x4 dclb that's lifted. I'm just joined xr because it's more about go fast and handling.

I know they make steering quickeners that change the ratio at which your wheel turns. They use them for race applications and I don't think one is currently made for our trucks but you could in theory buy one and fabricate it to work on your truck. My boss has one on his daughters race car.

cheapest way is a smaller streering wheel
That's really not going to change how many turns to full lock though and it's really not that cheap to do a steering wheel conversion. Plus you loose your cruise control and stereo controls as well

yes that is right but moving smaller wheel is faster and this makes the distance of the movement of you hand less think of it as a short shifter like a cut down stock sifter lever

I know exactly what it's like but in the money you'll spend getting a smaller wheel you could fab up a steering quickener and be done.

I have dealt with them for the size of them aka fitting them in is no easy task be easier to find a rack to swap in or mod the stock racl

All the ones I have worked with have been relatively small. The ones my boss uses on his flat track race cars are pretty compact. Not sure the price on the ones he uses though.

what I ment from fitting them in is making them work with the stock xr since it's a collapsible steering column and ya have exhaust to worrie about

Where they mount wouldn't interfere with anything though. Would be able to mount it right on the frame rail inline. Would have to look closer at it but it's doable for sure.

This is very true. It would probably need a small spacer off the frame to mount on in order to keep the shaft straight.

I think the solution would be to shorten the arm on the spindle that connects to the outer tie rod. This is usually done for drift cars for more angle, tighter turning radius, and reduces the steering ratio as I have this setup on my 240sx with PBM parts (Powered by Max) On my XR, I have the DJM 3" drop and causes my tierods all the way extended and angled, having bump steer... Because I have a spare set of spindles, I want to experiment with this by cutting off the mounting point for the tierod and welding it to the front of the part that bolts to the bottom of the spindle to offset the 3" drop. The down side is you would also need offset brackets from the steering rack to the tierod or move the steering rack back and plus it puts more stress on the steering rack.
