Hard Tonneau

Hi guys,

Just bought my '12 X a few weeks ago, and it came with a color matched Leer hard tonneau. I had to take it off today to help my brother move some furniture, and overall I like the look of the truck better without it. And ultimately, it is a truck, and I intend on using the bed fairly often.

Other than a slight increase in MPG and added security of a locked bed, is there any other benefits of keeping it? I was thinking of getting rid of it and using the extra cash for some other mods, or putting away for a future turbo.

I was just wondering what everyone's OPINION is on having a color matched fiberglass tonneau.

I had a Gaylord hard tonneau cover and like you I used my truck way too much. It was a two person job to take it off every time and most of the time it was left off for months at a time. I got a Truxedo Titanium now and it is the best of both worlds. It is a hard cover that rolls up so I get the security (someone can still get in if they want to) and the ease of access to my bed. It's low profile and to be honest looks better than the hard tonneau.

Each person will have their own opinion but I would go with the cover I have now any day of the week.

I've got the Gaylord Speedturr and I love it, minus the recent hardware failures. To each his own. If you use the bed often a role up, folding, or cloth tonneau may be more practical.

I had a Pace Edwards Full Metal Jack Rabbit rolling tonneau.
Best of both worlds... rigid, lockable, and rolls out of the way when you need the bed!

This is me too - plus my Gaylord started chipping clear really badly.

I had a Pace Edwards Full Metal Jack Rabbit rolling tonneau.

I'm considering picking one of these up and just cutting up the Gaylord and throwing it in the landfill piece by piece since it's taking up space in my office and I can't even give the thing away.

I don't remember the brand but i got a pleather locking cover off amazon had it on for half a week and the hardware that latched it to the bed failed while doing 70 on beltway8 so i sent it back i loved the look tho

Thanks for your opinions you guys! If I find a way to store it in my tiny one car garage, I will probably end up keeping it, but it will remain off for most of the summer months i think...
the market doesnt seem to hot on craigslist here in the Atlanta area for hard tonneaus, most either staying posted, or going for around 400-500, which at that point I'd rather keep it.

Mine isnt too hard to take off, only 6 clamps holding it to the bed rail, and the allignment stays correct when I remove/reinstall. Its the storage thats really killing me. With a large 6' snapon tool box, and a miata in the garage, plus lawn care equipment, there isnt much wiggle room in there

Mine doesn't have the "scissor" style hinges - but the straight pneumatic lifts. Is this what you need?

Let's take it to PM as not to jack this thread...but I'd like to see more detail how your hardware attaches to the fiberglass tonneau. Can it be removed? I don't think they changed the cover itself, just the hinge system. Something tells me I could use that to solve my hardware issues.

Wow, i really like those lifts, it would make side access much easier than the way mine is set up!

Although after removing and reinstalling mine last week, the lifts now automatically push open the cover as soon as i unlatch it, which was not the case before, and I would have to lift it after opening the latch. Its made it much more convenient for me

Silly question, but anyone gone camping inside their bed with the tonneau? it came to me when I had the cover closed and I was crawling in the bed to remove the clamps haha
