I wanted to spread the work for individuals who have catalytic converter woes that there is now a alternative to Toyota manufactured units. I had to replace my cats (yes, all of them) and found I had to purchase the front and the rears (which were previously removed by the old owner). Now I have a great system, although it was pricey but not as pricey as it would have been from Toyota. Just an FYI, I hear the front are also supposed to be coming soon.

Also the rear cats aren’t required unless you live in California, at least here in Texas they aren’t required

I will ask the installer the brand/model and post a photo of the laser etched # on the cat. SgtBadA, you are correct that the rear cats are not required for many states but here in CA they are needed. In reality, the rear cats are not even monitored so if they failed no one could tell. The truck would only fail a CA emissions test if a properly trained inspector were to look under the car and see that they were absent. I just went and all the 60 yo inspector did was plug in the machine for inspection so I did not really need to get them installed because he would have missed it.

I figured I would spread some knowledge on the part numbers. I can also get the rear cats too.

You say you’re in California? Are the cats CARB compliant? I’ve been looking long time for a factory alternative and have found zero options. Definitely interested in part numbers. Unfortunately in California the federal approved cats won’t pass visual inspection if they run the part number.

To be legal in CA any header has to have a C.A.R.B. (California Air Resources Board) tag on them. Header options are limited legally http://www.jbaheaders.com/feature_pages/05Tacomanew.asp Then those have to be attached with correct C.A.R.B. approved catalytic converters that are installed. Our model in CA is supposed to have 4 catalytic converters as stock. I did it the legal way after there was a final approved catalytic converter that was not Toyota factory made (extremely expensive). I took it to a local SMOG shop and the guy plugged it in, turned it on for 15 minutes, and filled out the form and I was out the door. They are supposed to verify the cats have the correct serial numbers visually. This guy did not even bend down to look under if they were even present.

You may get lucky if you don't go the legal route like I would have (even though I did it the legal route) but you may get some problems at the shop. CA as a state is very strict on compliance. Some SMOG shops are not strict in their practices though.

I bought JBA shorty headers which are approved and had new cats welded on all 4 sections and was able to reuse the dual BORLA to single exhaust tip system.

I doubt URD would comply since I believe they do not offer a shorty version which would accommodate 2 sets of catalytic converters. I took the hit on this because I mistakenly bought the truck and not confirming the presence of a new SMOG cert which is supposed to be done by the seller unless they buyer works something out.
Good Luck. I do see that you have Hawaii as part of your nametag and I am not sure of 808 smog regulations.

No regulations for smog here but the loudness without cats could be an issue not just for me but others around me since i live in a quiet neighborhood I don’t know how loud it would be without the cats.

Do you have a video of the exhaust sound on YT? I'm curious on how it sounds with an X pipe.

Apparently Walker CC wont work due to my model year... wtf?! I spoke to a few muffler shops and got the same response because mine is 2012? ! This is some ridiculous BS cali. Well at least Magnaflow will have something available later this year for it so I guess my exhaust wont be upgraded till then.

So i just got hit with the dreaded P0430 Bank 2 (showed up twice on the sheet they gave me at Auto Zone) and P0420 Bank 1. I took a look under my X and I have 2 Converters off each exhaust manifold and 2 under on the y pipe. I am in AZ; so from what I read I can remove the 2 underneath to save on cash. It's hard to tell which to replace (off the manifold or on the Y pipe). In thinking thru replacement...If i go the route of Magnaflow i'll need to buy a Y pipe thru URD or someone else in order to omit the bottom 2. Or I leave the 2 off the manifold and just run a y pipe off those to omit the 2 rear converters?

That may work but could throw up some codes if you remove 2 of the cats. You may need to purchase the O2 simulators which can mimic the sensors. I think removing the rears may be better for the sensor reporting but I am not as familiar with that aspect. Ask a local muffler shop for state requirements to confirm. My inspector did not even look under the truck for the 2nd set of cats though.

Thanks Justin for the response. I'm in Arizona and from what other have mentioned above we dont need the other 2 cats on the y pipe to pass. I may go the route of the entire unit from URD, by looking at cost effectiveness it's cheaper than rebuilding a the entire thing using the magna flow exhaust mani's and the URD Y pipe separately. I'll send an email to URD to go over the O2 questions you pointed out. I only seen 1 set of o2's that were right off the manifolds but i'll look again to make sure.
