Okay folks ...
My penny and a half here ...
Seems to be an awful lot of animosity here about the dealings of XRU staff over this infamous incident between DS / HVM and Gadget / URD. Now, I'll be the first to admit that I didn't see the thread in question, I've only caught wind of it in a couple of threads that have gone viral since then (including this one). But what I do know, and what I am sure most everyone else on XRU knows is of a certain combative disrespect that has gone one for ages between them two. It's about as famous, well known and publicized as a certain oil puddle brewing in the Gulf Coast. I have my own opinions of this ongoing dispute, but I won't go there. So, the end result that has come out of all of this, however unfortunate and disappointing - if you think about it hard enough and push the boundaries of your imagination, wasn't entirely surprising. No, I'm not condoning anyone, anything or any action nor am I taking sides, I'm just saying that it was only a matter of time before something serious happened.
For that matter, it seems that engine performance threads in general seems to take on a highly inflammatory atmosphere. I can think of a couple different folk that have lost their XRU memberships at least partly over caustic behavior over performance-related topics (no, I'm not naming names and I don't want anyone naming any either, I'm just bringing up the point that it seems that performance topics seem to bring the worst out of people - unnecessarily). Now, people will disagree with each other. That's a part of life. However, another part of life is learning how to disagree with others without resorting to the nuclear option and becoming inflammatory, and attempting to belittle and intimidate those that don't happen to agree with you. Civility, it's a wonderful thing. Come on, this is XRU, not Washington D.C.
In terms of comments of XRU staff being overly paternalistic and resorting to heavy-handed tactics, consider this ... this thread is still open. Had XRU staff been as heavy handed as some seem to be alleging, this thread would have been closed, locked-down, deleted, vaporized into binary kingdom-come and any perpetrators branded and / or banished to the realms of binary purgatory. Yes, XRU has rules. Yes, XRU has admins. But, consider the reality of this site and the fact that it is an online forum. Being on the internet, it's also subject to the phenomena of anonymity, of people being online and feeling "shielded" and being more willing to open up and spill venom than had they been in real life. Then consider what it's built despite that, its community. Then compare / contrast it to other forums and, despite its shortcomings, XRU is still an awesome online gathering place for performance enthusiasts ... even if a few of them happen to disagree with each other.
... end rant ... now on with your regularly scheduled programming ...
