Okay.. So I just bought an X-runner that has what looks like spray painted stock rims.. looks like it was painted red first and then black because it didn't sell at red.. .. I was thinking of trying to remove the paint with some paint thinner.... GOOD or BAD idea?

I would think bad idea because they are painted silver stock if I remember correctly. Best bet is to get them powder coated as they will strip them down and coat them.

So even stock ones are just simply painted?

Pretty much all car wheels are painted. So, yes. What did you think they were coated with?

yes and no.... its not a rattle can paint job its a heavy duty automotive paint that is able to stand up to the ware and tare of everyday....

i would not recommend using thinner.... i would say use sand paper and take the bad paint to the original... i have heard that these wheels are pretty pitted under the original (to the steel) it may require a lot of filling and time it you go too deep....

*sand to the original color

*use a high quality automotive primer... would not recommend rattle car but rather a spray gun

*paint base

*clear

*buff and done :top:

honestly, I would take them and have them powder coated. when the shop preps them, they will get all that off. You just choose the color you want them done.

If you paint em' it'll just chip and drive you crazy, even some guys that've powder coated em have had that problem when they get their tires changed. Same reason I haven't touched mine. But if you're dead set on it, definately get em PC'd over painting yourself.

U should get them powder coated cause they'll strip them for u. They'll either sand blast them or media blast em

I hear when they're powder coated they don't shine as much as the black painted ones. I like the shine.

If you can swing the 75 or 80 bucks per rim do it Ive seen how they do it they sandblast the old paint out and leave it in raw aluminum then they put the first coat of powder bake it at 450 degrees for 20 min they took it out and put another coat of powder and baked for 30 min and the end result is durable strong finish and looks very smooth; good luck with your choice :driver:

I used the duplicolor black on the scion TC wheels on my matrix

after a tire change I have to repaint them, as the tire machines always chew the lip up, but otherwise the paint holds up reasonably well for 45,000 miles between tire changes. if you happen to get some curb rash/chips/other damages, just mask and touch up as needed. Not perfect, but it works well for these rims I picked up for 20 bucks.

These are way better than the stock steelies I had, and only paid 20 bucks for the set.

Definitely don't use paint stripper. I tried that with my painted stockers, and it's not only a pain in the ass, it takes the original coating off too. But not very easily. It took me a whole weekend and didn't even finish two of them.
I said screw this and bought new wheels.

Powder coat or new wheels or the way to go.
