I heard fill it till it runs out the fill hole and the same for the tranny. is this correct

YUP!

A couple tips I've heard as well:

1) before removing the drain plug ALWAYS REMOVE THE FILL PLUG FIRST!!
That way if the fill plug won't come out you haven't got a transmission or differential with no oil and no way to fill it!!

2) For transmission you can remove the shifter and fill it from the top until it runs out the fill hole on side. Some say it's easier that way as it's harder to pump oil up and into the fill hole. I don't know as I've never done it myself but it makes sense (other than the hassle of removing console to get to shifter)

I used a pump that I use for my merc 150 outboard gear case got it at walmart it comes with a clear 1ft. Flexable tube In the boat section it worked fine didn't quite fit the redline quart but I managed.

I kind of made something like that and use the compressor.
