Well long story short I have a 09 Tacoma with a TRD blower + about every power increasing add ons and is on its second engine after first one exploded a piston and connecting rod while under boost + nitrous. Engine is OEM block (1GR-FE) but new forged internals, ARP studs, etc, and a MAP-Ecu3 computer since its seeing FI and spray and is one of my daily drivers. But that's not the current issue...

Truck has about 10K miles on new engine and all has been fine since break-in. Well yesterday I drove about a mile down the road to the local gas station. Filled up the truck (1/2 tank) and a 5 gallon container for lawn chores. After filling up I went to start the truck and it fired right up. But within 5 seconds it began stumbling and finally shut off. I attempted to restart it but it would barely start and would die. Had the truck towed home. It acted like my GTO did when the fuel pump died. So I assumed that was the case and left it sitting and used the 5 gallons of gas in container for yard work which assured me it was not bad gas (same pump/grade). So today I unhook the fuel line going to the URD 7th injector and placed it into a clear container and turn the key for a second or two. To my surprise gas was pumping out like it was supposed to. I thought maybe pump just wasn't working yesterday. Reattached line and truck would either not crank or crank, stumble, and die. Checked all fuses and all were good. Then I disconnected the MAF sensor wiring harness and truck now cranks and runs (a bit rich 12:1 according to WB). Replug in the MAF sensor harness and original problems reoccur.

My question is could a MAF sensor suddenly die and cause the truck to not be able to run for more than 1-2 seconds? Could it be dirty and cause that much problems? Or would it have to be completely dead? If dirty is a possibility I will buy some MAF sensor cleaning spray tomorrow. Could some other problem be the actual problem but disconnecting the MAF sensor temporarily corrects it or does my test confirm a bad MAF sensor?

Thanks...

The MAF sensor could possibly be the problem because if it is dirty then its not not reading a lot of air most likely making your truck run very learn and could possibly cause your engine to die because of the lack of fuel and poor combustion. if you want to make sure that it is your MAF sensor then your going to need an Oscilloscope to see if your running leaner than you should. but since it does run good with out it, i guess you could buy a new one and put it in but its kind of a shot in the dark.

It's probably that your maf sensor is bad. When I was having maf issues with mine, whenever one went bad it would make it run stupid rich, to where it would barely stay running and you could see raw fuel coming out of the exhaust. Unplugging it makes the truck go into limp mode but will usually run perfectly fine like that. It may be a dirty sensor but it's unlikely because if that was the case then your symptoms would have shown up slowly over time, not all at once. You can try to clean it and see if it helps but you'll probably just need to get a new maf sensor.

I have a wideband hooked up. But the engine will not stay running long enough with MAF sensor plugged in to let the WB warm up enough to work. I have ordered a new MAF sensor ($75 shipped overnight) which should arrive tomorrow. I will replace it then and see if that is the issue. Worst case the truck (and MAF sensor) have over 100k miles on them so it won't hurt to replace the sensor regardless.

The thing that bothers me is how the sensor went bad instantly. I have experienced them getting dirty in the past but never an instant death. The only thing I could think is one day last week I drove home in a monsoon. It was raining so heavily that the roads were completely flooded for the entire 35 minute commute home. At one point the truck started running rough under acceleration during that drive. I have a modified URD TCAI that is fit to my TRD S/C. Wondering if it was sucking in too much water and causing the MAF sensor to read squirrely then and that caused corrosion on the sensor and then days later it died? May have nothing to do with it just seems like too much of a coincidence to me.

rennurx thanks for info....

But I already ordered a new one for $75 including overnight shipping. Can't have the truck down any longer than it has to be.

I had a similar issue with my Map-Ecu2. Was out adjusting the tune to lean out some in the higher RPMs. All of a sudden, th truck got super rich, lost power, amd wouldn't run.

Pulled out the Map-Ecu2, and it ran fine. A little harder in your case, but worthy of a try.

Well got the new MAF sensor in Tuesday. Installed it Tuesday night but same problem exists. Unplug the new MAF sensor and it will crank but is 10:1 as before. I am kinda at a loss. I hate to pay to have it towed 35+ miles to the nearest dealer since there is so much aftermarket stuff on the truck that I am sure it will cause a problem on their end finding the problem.

Could there be a short in the MAF sensor wiring harness? Could unplugging it cause the short not to effect it?

Torspd I have wondered if the Map-Ecu3 could be the culprit... But I am unsure how to proceed with checking it. Since it is a splice in electronic could I simply unplug both the 16 and 18 pin connectors from it and see if the truck would run? Or is the Map-Ecu3 necessary for timing or some other functions since some of its connections are cut oem wire and hook each side up to seperate pins outs on Map-Ecu3?

With my work schedule I usually only have one day off each week and the rest of the days I leave around daylight and get back around dark so its hard to work and trouble shoot the vehicle regularly...

I'm not sure what all wires are used? I can only say that I would splice in bullet connectors. So that you can plug the factory wires back together, as well as the Map-ECU3. Kind of makes it plug n play. At least this way, you could test it. If the Map-ECU3 needs to be repaired, you'll be able to drive it easily.

Truck is still dead. Got the new maf sensor checked and the wiring harness to it. Both are correct. So I'm down to two causes...

1) fuel... Could the 3 gallons of regular I got before the 12 gallons of premium have been bad? Could that cause it to die so quickly? Water sinks compared to gas correct? Could it have settled and been immediately sucked into the fuel bucket and caused the engine to struggle/die within seconds? How could I test fuel for water? I can disconnect the fuel line and connect fuel very easily. Just don't know how to test.

2) spark... How to test to see if I am actually getting spark?

Are you saying you ran your supercharged truck on 87?

You forgot one possibility. 3) the Map-ECU3.

Pull a coil pack out of the valve cover. Plug it back in so that you can see the inside. Start the truck. You should be able to watch it spark.

Follow Up....

Sorry for the delay. Life has been hectic!

Truck was taken back to the engine builders where is sat, and sat, and sat... due to him being backed up and having some pretty serious health issues come up.

What we found is the passenger side exhaust valves were stuck open and the bearings for that cam messed up, piston rings rusted, water/fuel in the oil, etc.

All of this was caused by my guess #1... BAD FUEL!

When the tank was drained almost 6 gallons of water was found along with actual fuel! Now months later I am having to try to get the proof I need to go after the gas station/fuel delivery for the damage which is very had due to the length of time that has expired. We will see where that goes.

But the engine is repaired (AGAIN) and reinstalled and can be run as soon as I can get a set of replacement TRD injectors... ANYBODY GOT ANY FOR SALE???

Wow what a mess. I find it hard to believe that "bad fuel' did this. I can see running a tune for 93 or 91 with 87 in the tank causing issues. But I am amazed that you pulled that much water out of the tank. Happy to see you've got it back and good luck with the gas station!

Must have had a really high ethanol content. Sh!tty. If you didn't, only use Tier 1 gasoline.

Inspector thinks they have a leaky filll area (broken concrete) and I filled up after a hard all night rain.

All damage was caused within seconds of fueling up. Fired up truck and it started stumbling before I could get out of the parking lot! Then it sitting for several months caused the rings etc to rust.
