The Ticks

Which tick is it?
Let your truck cool down over nite.
Start it up in the morning and if you hear a tick it's your exhaust manifold.
Take it up to 3K while it's still cold and if you hear a tick it's your exhaust manifold.
Once it's up to operating temperature it's just the Taco tick.
I run high octane gas and just figure the tick is unspent vapor when my engine is hot as hell.

Thanks for the detailed input. I'm going out to check mine right now...

as a toyota tech, we see hundreds of 1GR's (4.0 v6) in all the trucks. they are all equally noisy, and the manifolds do nothing...we have never been able to stop the noise, but just think its the lifters...there is nothing you can do about it, sorry guys

I agree 100% that they don't do anything. Had this done a while back and noticed 0 improvements... never really was a big problem for me as my 3000gt had lifter tick that was worse than this. I seen there was a TSB out for it and figured i would give it a shot... it was nothing but wasted time without the X

Yeah the exhaust manifolds in my opinion do nothing, the exhaust manifolds are thin walled and the valve train noise just resonates threw them, Normal for a 1GR-FE

That's not the Toyota tick or the exhaust tick.
I want to call it the Toyota grind, but it is not a grind.
Occasionally I hear this for about 30 seconds.
30 seconds is too long.

Thats not the same engine tick as described in the TSB.... what you have described sounds like a throw out bearing issue. Take it in to the stealership :top:

Not normal, but seems to be an issue for some... i have recently started hearing my throwout bearing making noises too  It will be going in for a tranny swap and new throwout bearing in the near future... I'm sure its going to take some complaining to get it done tho. :top:

so what is the long term outcome of this problem? Unusable tranny? or something else? Will it cause any other problems? Covered under warranty? sorry for all the questions but my truck is my work truck as well so i'm just concerned is all.

the long term outcome of ur throwout bearing making this distinctive noise is that your clutch has a shorter life than it should. toyota clutches have a reputation of lasting over 100k, there are some people who have had to get theirs replaced before 30k b/c of this issue. Toyota knows about the issue and thats why they issued a TSB for it. the only issue with that is that u have to prove the problem exists on ur truck.

TSB's are covered under warranty.
if ur clutch wears out, ur engine and transmission will not engage ending up in reduced and even loss of power. one way to tell if ur clutch is slipping is to go about 50mph and put it in 6th gear, floor it. watch ur tach and speedo and see if they both move in sinc or if ur tach is goin up and ur speedo isn't going anywhere. if that happens, ur clutch is slipping.

Well I did this and the tach went up slow and the speedo was moving slowly as well didnt notice any clutch slippage thought, everything seemed normal.
