If you are just looking to remove water spots and oxidation any minor polish will do. If you are looking to remove scratches then you need to step it up with a compound, follow up with a lighter compound or polish, follow up with a glaze, then finally a top coat of wax.

The meguiars line of products works very well, is very user friendly, and can be found locally anywhere.

It's a good idea to clay bar the car once a year as well before a polish job.

I also like the 3M product line of scratch removers, compounds, polishes, and waxes (3M now owns Meguiars).

You can go crazy trying out different products - there is a TON of them out there and everyone has their own preference.

Ive spent so much money on different chemicals/products over the years... lol Thousands of dollars im sure.

For rubbing compounds, if you have a good buffer and have good experience using it, I've worked with these two in particular in my repaint and scratch removal applications

- 3M Rubbing Compound http://3mcollision.com/products/buf...ect-it-ii-rubbing-compound-1-quart-05973.html

- 3M Extra Cut Rubbing Compound http://3mcollision.com/products/buf...rubbing-compound-06060-1-quart-us-946-ml.html

Both of these are professional line products, you'll need to head to your local autobody supply store to get them (the dude at Autozone won't know what you're talking about).

The former is a gentler compound, the latter is a bit grittier and meant for heavier duty applications. I wouldn't use the latter unless you've got some scratches/deep swirls/marring you're trying to get rid of.

Both products (esp the latter) should then be followed up with a good fine-cut polisher, Meguiars' line of products (as noted by DS above) should work fine.
