hello all I'm sort of new on here... well more of a creeper then a participant but have seen alot of knowledgeable and helpfull peeps on here. My lsd is smoked and when the rearend gets to temp it starts to sound like tire rub when I turn a corner, if I jack up one tire I can spin it with a little bit of effort and it will make the noise. Yoda wants $2000 just for the lsd and will not rebuild them. And not sure if I will enjoy a true trac but Aamco transmission said they would rebuild it, so should I go this route? Is it going to be as good as factory? Not that it was that good blowing with only 100k on it. Is it going to be done right? Is there another option? I would prefer to do the work my self but lack the tools and experience in the "rearend", can I put the pumpkin in or dose it need to be shimed upon axle instalation? Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

100,000 miles?? Mine did not last 30,000.

I pulled it out and replaced it with a TrueTrac. I will bet the first TrueTrac ever put into an XRunner.

I would not rebuild the current one. I would put something better in.

sorry 100 000 kms for my neighbours or should I say "neighbors" to the south. Daily driven in the summer only, is there ever times when your true trac lights only one tire? I tow and drift (on back roads) and if I cant have fun the way I want then I wouldnt want it. Is it quiet and easy to shim?

It is not a locker. Like most LSDs you will need traction on both rear tires for it to work. If you lift one off of the pavement, then it does not work well. Lockers works good for this and that is why off road guys use them.

1. This generation (8.4") Toyota Rear end, is not easy to shim, assuming your talking about bearing preload, pinion depth and backlash. . And if you' are referring to the diff its self, the Tru-trac is a Helical style diff, and is not shimmed like a Clutch type to adjust lock up. Our stock diffs are 1way, lock only under accel, clutch type LSD's.

2. Like Gadget said, the tru-trac is not a locker, it is a Torque Multiplier....so if one tire comes off the ground, it will not lock.

3. If you ACTUALLY drift, as in connect corners, a Helical diff will be terrible for that. mainly to do the weight transfer exerted during the transition, it can peg leg, and "open-up", resulting in a you losing the drift, and boat load of speed.

4. in terms of doing the work your self, you can cut down ALOT on labour, by removing the entire hog nose/3rd memeber as one unit, and bring the new diff, and 3rd member to a local shop. They probably wont charge more then $100 bucks for that install. You really don't need any special tools... 10mm wrench for the brake lines, 14mm for the drive shaft and axle shafts, a set of sockets (10, 12, 14, 17mm)with a 3/8 and 1/2' ratchet. And a 15/16" socket works perfect ( 24mm, same shit) for the drain/fill plug. A set of jacks, stands, and maybe a buddy to help with the 3rd member, as that SOB is heavy as fawk....and to help with the brake bleeding too. Oh, and some drum brake service tools...pliers work...but no ideal

And, by what your saying, the diff is most certainly blown, if you can spin on tire with other on the ground, using minimal force.

Now, depending on what level of driving you sound like you do..cause if all you do is Drift/tow (strange combo...) i would recommend a ARB air-locker... It will work great sliding around on back roads (welded diff and 2 way diff {lock accell/decel}, are the real only route to go for drifting)....Though, you can use a helical, vicious and 1way style clutch type for drifting, it is just not IDEAL... and with the ability to lock it with the flip of a switch, even a slick boat ramp will be no challenge, and once you're moving, you can flip it back, open it up not have to deal with binding issues associated with a Welded diff/full time locked diff.

Now, just the air locker alone....its about a $1,000, maybe a little more since you're north of the border. Not counting installation....

Lunchbox Lockers/Detroit style lockers are also no bueno, do to them only locking under accel, and their On/off tendencies....unpredictable rear diffs and "back road" road drifting can result in you becoming close friends with the local Greenery...:ahhhhh:

And yeah I dont drift and tow at the same time lol but I'm in the sticks with lots of fun to be had on paved backroads plus tow my quad or boat when I need. I'm not pro drift but what was in it seemed to work well for my BS it was always locked when I needed it, but I dont want to rebuild something every 50k like im starting to see with this heap of shit. thanks for the info it helps but cant make up my mind. I dont want to install a true trac to find out its not for me. should of kept my st185 made back when toyota bilt quality, guess I'll just park my $20000 truck untill I decide and drive my reliable $2000 sunfire lol cheers

So I'm pretty sure I've shredded a tooth off either my ring or pinion gear in my X's Diff. Does anyone know whether or not someone has posted a write up on how to replace these gears. I think i found a ring and pinion set on amazon for pretty cheap but I've heard the process can be complicated. any help or advice would be appreciated.

I am pretty sure most all oem lsd are a 2 way lsd locked i know the mk2 supra is a 2 way mk3 is a 2 way there no cam it just locked tell it can be over ridden and there no cam for the pin

any who i have notice my diff works well but like alot of toyota diff its not as tight as it could be or made to be by just replaceing the spring or springs if it uses more then one

has any one even pulled theres apart and taken a look at it becuase i have a good feeling it will be very simular to a mk3 supra 8 inc diff witch just use's the one spring.

ps what is failing in these diffs? Is it the barrings or lack of perload from useinga crush sleav and haven the bad case of axle wrap cuaseing ypu to loose perload or is a spider gear issue ?

If you rag on your truck, flying around corners on the back roads be prepared to buy some parts. It goes with the territory. Have fun, bring your wallet. I would let the local differential specialist rebuild it and see how that goes. That clutched lsd works pretty good for daily, plus a little drifting. Good luck don't give up on the truck.

I ended up going with eaton posi from just diffs I believe, it's same as stock diff (clutched) but wound a little tighter always 2 wheel peel. chirps inside tire a little going around corners, I re and re'd the pumpkin but had tranns shop install diff in pumkin and set lash. I've only put little over 10000km on it since 2012 lol so durability still unknow?? Love the truck but lacks the durability I've come to expect from toyota and now it needs a tob which means new clutch while I'm at it:thumbdown: holding off until some one else paves the way for a 2jz swap hum hum

I heard to many issues with ARB. I went with the TJM air locker and pump. It's Australian brand that only deals with Toyota. It is a very expensive way to go, but I use it for daily and drift. Cheaper then ARB as well. I got mine through summit racing with a warranty. I'm probably the first and only one I know of with an air locker in the x-runner. Plus I did most of the work myself except for the install of the locker in the 3rd member. I took the 3rd member and locker to a drive line shop to install.

"Pretty much the same" and "the same" are very different. What does this upgrade consist of? I am going to be putting a new diff in soon and would love to know the details on a $40 upgrade compared to a new third member.

From what I pulled of of wier performances website looks like a shim kit with a extra stiffer spring. Have not personally pulled out the third member in one of these trucks but have heard that the stock lsd is a pain to shim. Maybe one of the more diff savy guys will chime in.
