Caranuba vs Synthetic

Well everywhere Ive read says that caranuba is better than synthetic. Its just that synthetic lasts longer and is cheaper. So I wanna get Meguiars since Ive never been let down with their products and I dont have enough money to buy the super expensive stuff. My question is which should I get, either the Gold Class or the NXT. The Gold Class is caranuba but is there enough in it to really give off that trademark caranuba shine or does it really matter.

Most prefer the NXT because of it's durability, it tends to last a little longer than the Gold Class. Some still have a favorite between the two and the best thing i can tell you is to try both and use the one that you think gives you the best results. Remember, a good wax job is achieved with good paint prep (claying and polishing and then the wax).

Lol their NXT tech wax is by far some of the best stuff they have ever made.

People say Caranuba is better, but in reality these days Sythetic is better.

It's like Conventional oil vs. Synth, with Synth you have so much more control over what goes into it.

I can tell you from personal experience, that putting and taking off the NXT wax is sooo much easier than other "conventional" waxes. It glides off so much easier.

But everyone has their own personal preferences!

I am with Steve. Try them both and see what you like. I prefer real wax, because of the depth of the shine.

The best synthetic wax ive used to date believe it or not is the 3M stuff, I used to be an NXT 2.0 guy until I tried 3M.

I agree with coupe though, the real thing gives way more depth.

For car shows id use the real thing, every day around town I use the 3M.

This picture is a quick 3M wax job before a car show (literally a half ass quick clean up).

I would try every product you can and find what you like best.

Different waxes work better for different colors too.

Almost all of 3M's product line is superior to a lot of other products in many divisions. Their products are on the ball in many areas.

I figured id give their wax a try, I was sold after the first use and it replaced my liquid NXT wax for ease of use, shine, and finish.

Yeah, i believe the acquisition of meguiars by 3M was made a couple months ago.

I've read you can use a synthetic for the durability, and go over it with the caranuba for deeper shine. I haven't done this myself, who wants to wax their truck two friggin time in a row. :frown:

I've never heard of anyone applying a Wax over a sealant though. It would seem to be kind of pointless.

I don't see how the wax would help to increase gloss, etc. when applied over a product that does the same thing. It's like trying to see through two slightly different panes of glass.

But give it a shot and see how it works!

wax is just for protection right, it doesnt actually fill in any surface scratches(very very light scratches) or make the paint look better correct? or am i just not waxing my car right? all i do is wash my car and get every thing that isnt a chip in the paint off then wax it. it feels so much smoother after waxing vs not waxed but it doesnt really look different when i do it when compared side by side, very slightly but not noticable after 2 feet. i use meguiars nxt liquid wax, not the spray bottle though. what do i need to do to make the car look like it has a brand new paint job or that liquid look? btw its an 08 so theres no fading and i dont have any serious scratches but i do have a bunch of rock chips on the front bumper and by the rear fenders where paint is completely chipped through due to rocks. im not worried about the chips because it happens and you cant prevent them, i just want my car to really shine.

I use Klasse glaze and always put wax over it.

The main thing is to prep the surface, you can wax crap but its still crap underneath.

You should wash, claybar (if needed), and polish (if needed) any scratches out prior to sealant and wax.

LOL, it depends on the Wax. There's lots of different formulas. Most will fill in minor imperfections, or try to minimize them.

If you want your truck to really shine there's only one way to do that .

I have been hearing some absolutly awesome things about the 105 and 205 compounds.

There's some good before/after machine polishing threads around. You can't beat it. I used to think hand polsihing/waxing was the way to go. But once you see what a DA can do for you.... you'll be amazed.

Clay bar removes stuck on surface contaminants with out removing paint.

A real fine polish removes and blends clear coat imperfections such as mild scratches, oxidation, water spots, etc....

Its a good idea to clay bar before polishing so you do not introduce any new imperfections during the process.

I clay bar 1-2 times a year, polish only as needed, and apply a glaze to seal it in. Then through out the year I wax to add an additional layer of protection to beef up the shine.

If you keep up with proper technique hand washes & waxes you shouldn't really ever have to polish.

Clay barring is a safe way to remove stubborn bug splatters and other stuck on contaminants as well.

Clay Bar is something you do first, it removes surface contaminants.

Polish will condition the paint and help bring out richness. Some polishes have compounds in them to help smooth them out and removing imperfections.

You can see above to see what a Sealant is .

As far as how many you should do, it depends on the results you want. If you just want it clean and not oxidized. Just wash it and put on Sealant. If you want a better shine Clay, Polish, then either Sealant or Wax. :top:

I find that the depth of shine has a lot to do with the prep work (claying and polishing) before the glaze is applied.

A sealant is a glaze, its an acrylic product that cures to the paint long term to provide way better protection then wax can.

Some sealants/glazes contain polishing compounds. I personally stay away from all-in-one products.


Glazes last for months!!! (6 months +)

I can see where I applied a glaze and where I didnt over 6 months later when I spray the car down with water; no wax does that.

im looking for a better shine, so wash, clay, polish, then wax...crap thats gonna take a long time to do lol, it already take me 2 hours to wash and wax mainly because i make sure to get any little bump or trash off that isnt part of the paint. how hard is it to use a clay bar?

The hard part is getting neglected finishes back to looking perfect, once you get them back to near perfect the key is to maintain with proper technique hand washes & waxes.

Believe it or not many people introduce the most damage to their paint by improperly washing the surface.

A day of clay barring, polishing, glazing, and waxing will be an easy 6-8 hours done right.

Clay barring is very easy, just use lots of lube!

ALWAYS properly hand wash the car first before doing any kind of hand contact with the finish.


I recommend using a DA Buffer. Your good glazes are a son of a bitch to get off by hand because they bond so well.

You should be able to shine a flash light onto your paint with out seeing any scratches in the clear coat at all when finished.

It should look like a pool of calm water.
