Finally made it out to the gun range yesterday (only a few miles away) and had a great time. On the way home, I was about a mile from the house and hit the "limiter" at about 3k. I immediately check my gauges - CEL. Reach over and run a scan on the ScanGauge --- no code returned. I thought this was strange so I immediately pulled over and turned the truck off - but left the key on. As I came to a stop, I see steam pouring from the engine bay. First thing I look at is the temp gauge, it's in the red. Shit.

Get out the truck open the hood - coolant everywhere. On top of the engine, all over the passenger side wheel, passenger side frame, etc. Long story short(er): Wife brought some coolant to me since it had all leaked onto the ground while I was trying to find where the leak was coming from. It was really difficult to tell thought b/c there was coolant everywhere. I limped it home and jacked it up. Looks like the radiator may have cracked on the lower, passenger side. It is definitely leaking from there.

I'm thinking - new radiator - new hoses. Anything else I may be missing? The radiator is definitely at least one source of the leak. Could the water pump be involved too?

Seems like I can't catch a break here recently. :frown:

Have you checked the radiator cap yet?

Have you tried just pouring water into the radiator and seeing if it leaks out?

Is there any oil in the overflow tank?

Cap was definitely on tight. Once it was home and jacked off - engine off. It was still leaking from the lower, passenger side of the radiator.

No. I can test this today. Based on the above though, I expect it to leak from the same spot but will double check.

Is there any oil in the overflow tank?

Haven't directly looked but did look at the overflow tank when it first happened and I pulled over. The tank appeared completely empty. I'll double check today though.

dang that sucks dude :-( id just go ahead and replace the rad and hoses couldnt hurt if they are original. start with that, top it off with coolant and drive it around a bit. If it doesnt over head again your water pump should be fine :top:

This is kind of what I was thinking too. The radiator on my Chevy cracked in nearly the same spot 6-7 years after I had it. The truck is 7 years old at this point so it doesn't really surprised me all that much. I'm guessing about $2-300 for a new radiator and hoses and I'll just install it myself.

The check engine light and rev limiter was the UCON Engine Guardian kicking in to protect the engine from the over temp.

Lets hope you did not hurt the engine by overheating it. These aluminum engines don't like that much.

Let's certainly hope so. Engine is barely a year in this truck. Really kind of blows my mind. The long trip up to MD for X-Fest - and nothing. I drive 8 miles round trip (literally) to the range and back and my radiator pops.

Really easy to test and find the leak. Get a pressure tester from autozone (pretty sure they rent it out) and pressurize the system. Just fill it with clean h2o so you don't have to clean up again.

Got outside and ran some water through it. Definitely a ruptured radiator. Can't tell if maybe I hit it with the fan one of the many times that it's come off/gone on in the past few months or what but at least I know what it is and it's a pretty simple fix. I'll order a new one from Toyota tomorrow.

Now - hopefully no damage was done to the engine. And 2) cleaning up the mess is gonna be a PITA. All the work to keep my engine bay clean, down the drain just like that.
