Hi gang,

Been awhile, but that's life eh?

Anyway, I think my motor might be fried in the worst case, maybe a bad ring, bent valve, cracked head, etc.

Looks like with the new format on the forum, all my info is gone so here goes:

2005 Tacoma 4WD, 182K, TRD S/C, red URD pulley, 7th injector, UCON EMS with cam gears, etc. URD Spec-U exhaust, upgraded fuel pump, recent S/C overhaul. Truck is used for work with a camper on it, gross weight is about 6K with suspension and breaks upgraded to handle it. I had a head gasket go in 2011 and upgraded to a Cometic and ARP head studs.

I had an issue last week on a hot day that I missed a shift and bounced the rev limiter while in traffic and about ten minutes later I lost power and got a blinking CEL telling me I was having mis-fires, was just under a 1/4 tank of gas. The power steadily dropped until the motor just died and I was on the side of the road, got towed.

I got it home and let it cool down for a few hours. Then I started it up and it ran pretty rough, sounded bad and threw a P0351 which was #1 cylinder misfire. At Gadget's advice, I swapped plugs, no dice. Then I swapped coils and the code moved to the new cylinder so the coil was bad. I got a new one and it started right up, no codes.

Fast forward a couple days and it is just not running right, seems a bit low on power and I hear more "chugging" if that makes any sense. I did a job last night in that I had to put it in 4-low and go up a fairly steep climb for a few miles, gaining 1,800 vertical ( 8,000 to 9,800 feet elevation ). It seemed ok, I did not push it though, kept it at 2,500 or so. But on the way down, I heard that chugging noise a bit more as in a cylinder with low compression was dragging a bit. It just does not sound right and I can feel the roughness through the shift knob.

So I am feeling pretty unsettled at this point, mandatory compression check which means pulling the S/C off to get to the driver side plugs. But this morning, I started it up which seems a tad fast compared to normal and did some revs. The red flag was when I went passed 3K, I think the guardian on the UCON was kicking in and pulling it back down, something I had not noticed when driving it. Either way, it was doing this up and down thing anywhere above 3K.

As I said above, I am getting the truck in for a compression test but in the meantime, I gotta start thinking new motor as this one has 182K on it, 130K S/C'd so my luck might be running out.

What ya'll got for sources?

Sounds shitty. Although I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the motor is done yet. Do the compression check and that we'll tell the most. It sounds like it's an electrical issue to me. I have seen a couple of these motors let go. Go through all your wiring and connections to the ucon and everything else.

Have you tried removing the UCON? See if you can't get the truck running on the factory ECU.

I will definitely work with my mechanic on sorting things out on our end, compression check, any electrical demons and even taking the UCON off for a test.

I would love to get a line on motors too, this is a work truck so I need to get a handle on all aspects of getting it running.

If you find you have a busted engine, catch me in the office and I can go over the used engines I have access to. I have had great luck with this source and got a lot of folks fixed up with great used engines.

Thanks Gadget, I'll do that.

Mods, I put this thread in the wrong section, could we move it to F/I?

Also, for kicks I pulled all the plugs ( IKH24 ) on the passenger side which is where the codes were thrown and coil went bad, the gaps are all fine at about .032. But on cylinder #1 which is the coil that died, I notice a bit of oil residue on shoulder.

Plugs are cylinders 1,3,5 right to left:
